·       About St. Luke’s Ministry
St. Luke’s Ministry is an outreach ministry of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church located in the Capitol hill area of Denver, Colorado. St. Luke’s began offering CNA classes in 2004 to help meet the need of low-income individuals for better paying careers and the need of the community for trained, screened, caring healthcare workers.

Certified Nurse Aides are employed by health care and assisted living facilities, hospitals, and home health agencies.  New CNAs normally start between $10 and $11 an hour, earning up to $15 an hour with experience.

O
ur graduates have a bright future, as there are solid demand projections in the next decade for CNAs and other healthcare workers.

·
The training – CNA  - and graduation
St. Luke’s is certified training program by the Colorado Board of Nursing. Annually two to four classes are offered free of charge to qualified individuals.   Each classes meets for 81 hours of study including classroom, lab and clinical site training at a nearby health care facility. Quality training is provided by qualified staff and volunteers and small classes of no more than 10 students allow for individual learning.

Upon completion of the training, a graduation event is held at Our Savior’s Lutheran. Graduates invite family and friends for the celebration which includes a meal, children’s activities, ceremony and picture taking.
In addition, graduates are offered assistance with paperwork for application for the Colorado state CNA exam, and several opportunities for skills review sessions prior to testing.

·
Job placement and assistance
St. Luke’s assists individuals to obtain employment.  Each graduate receives additional classes which include interviewing skills, resume development and a list of potential employers.  At the graduation ceremony, each graduate receives a completed resume and a professional leather-bound interview folio.

If needed, additional coaching is provided till employment is obtained. St. Luke’s measures success by both graduation rates as well as job placement rates. Through our aftercare process we have been able to acquire information from graduates that over 90% obtained employment in the health care profession!

·
Long-term career support
St. Luke’s maintains regular contact with graduates and offers additional employment assistance as well as referrals to other training opportunities. Periodically St. Luke’s offers an “Access to LPN or RN Education” workshop for those interested in pursuing higher education and certification. Twenty-eight percent of our graduates have subsequently attended colleges, seeking higher education primarily in the health care field.

·
Volunteer opportunities and partners
St. Luke’s has operated for three and one-half years primarily with the leadership of volunteers. We have been blessed having had an Americorps/ Urban Servant Corps volunteer, a program director, a program facilitator, two registered nurses, and a former graduate give of their time to train others.  If you are a person with a medical background, please consider volunteering.  Our goal is to find assistants for clinical time, lab time and/or teaching classes.  Some positions may require certification as a trainer. If interested, we can provide the necessary information and requirements.

If you would like to support this ministry as a partner in developing truly caring and kind individuals to work in the health care field we ask for your financial support.  We are able to provide a tax deductible receipt through the church.

Please contact us and we will be delighted to answer questions, or meet with you and provide a tour of the facility.  Please contact Roger Swier, Director by email or by telephone.
